Flagyl is an effective drug used for the treatment of infections caused by bacteria and amoeba.

Drug useage

An antiprotozoal and antibacterial drug, Flagyl treats infections of the respiratory tract, stomach, joints, skin and vagina.

How taken

It is advised to take the drug as per the direction and not to deviate from he prescription. Never use Flagyl for longer days or take larger amounts of the drug as it can only bring in many complications.

Flagyl should have to be taken on empty stomach about an hour ahead of meals or 3 hours after meals. As the drug has to be slowly released into the body, Flagyl has only to be swallowed. Crushing or breaking or chewing the drug releases large amounts of the drug into the body.

Once you have started the drug, never discontinue till your doctor has recommended it. In case you stop the drug in the mid of a course, there is a possibility of the infections to come back.

Missed dose/overdose

Strictly follow your doses. Never miss any dose and if a dose is missed, take it as soon as you realise it. However, skip the missed dose if it is time for your regular dosage timings. Never mix two doses.

If by any chance you feel to have taken an overdose, contact your doctor immediately. Nausea, dizziness, vomiting, balance loss, numbness, tingling and seizures are some of the overdose symptoms.

Before Flagyl is prescribed for your infections, it is better to inform your physician about all your health conditions. Tell the doctor if you have any allergies to any specific medicine, food or any substance. Do not hide from the doctor if you are having any disease of the kidney, liver stomach and intestine or any blood disorders or epilepsy or seizure disorders.

Flagyl is not prescribed during the first trimester of pregnancy. Before the drug is prescribed, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or not. As the drug is traced in breast milk, feeding newborns should be avoided while taking the drug.

Warnings/precautions

Alcohol should be avoided while you are on Flagyl medication and after stopping the drug, you should have to wait for 3 days before he consume it.

Certain medicines are known to interact with Flagyl and so it is good to tell your doctor about all the medications that you are on. While taking antibiotics, you have to be careful as some antibiotics cause diarrhoea, which could be sign of a new infection.

Side effects

Once you come across allergic reactions like hives, swelling and breathing difficulty, call your doctor immediately. You should also not delay in contacting the doctor if you come across serious side effects including seizures, fever, body aches, flu symptoms, sore throat, numbness, tingling, white patches or sores in mouth and lips, diarrhoea and pain/burning sensation when urinating.

Some of the less serious side effects are: stomach pain, nausea, headache, loss of balance, dizziness, vaginal itching, vaginal discharge, metallic taste, dry mouth, cough, runny nose and swollen/sore tongue.
